Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children
Stella Smith lived there from 1927 to the early 1940's

Looking for anyone who can remember Stella Smith. My husband and I would appreciate hearing from anyone who could fill in the gaps for us. Mom would never talk about her life at the "school" or how she and her two sisters were taken from their home. The two sisters were adopted (each to separate homes, but somehow they managed to find each other in the 1950's.

It was only after Mom passed away that we obtained a copy of her school records from the MN History Center. We discovered that their father had died at 43 and their mother was left with 3 children under the age of 4.

It was also noted in her files that they lived in a "tar paper shack". Upon further searching through probate records for her father, we discovered that the tar paper shack was actually their new home that had not been fully sided at the time of his death. The house had only the tar paper on the outside. It's funny how things can be misconstrued.

We really regret that we did not try to get Mom to talk about her time at the "school". Maybe then she would have obtained a copy of her records and finally known why they were taken away by the county. She went to her grave not knowing this. We have informd her one surviving sister and she was just amazed. She always thought that their father had abandoned them. I urge others to get these records, so that some of their questions might also be answered.
